How to make ICONs??(ico)?

i%26#039;m a graphic designer and i want to make my own folder icons, favicons, ico files ect..., but i find that none of the adobe products allow you to save icon files.

so i got a plugin and its does the trick for xp or small icons,

(even though the image is at 256x256 px) if you enlarge the icon it will stay about 32x32 (or normal/classic icon size) with a big box

i understand that VISTA icons uses png Compression ico files,

but i guess you would still need to create the others sizes

so that they will scale when you change view them extra large

so i guess i can go ahead and make all the possible sizes but how would i combined them?

so how can i make vista png icons that will allow you to scale from tiny(favicon size) to super large ones

i find it extremely stupid how there is now way to do this with industry standard software.|||What I do to make the ico files is first to make the different icon sizes in photoshop and just copy and paste using this program http://icofx.ro/ which let%26#039;s you save the different icon sizes and combine them into the .ico file.|||Photoshop is the standard. You need a plugging to save documents in ico format in Photoshop.

You can download a free plugging at:

http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/

The standard icon editor in Linux is Gimp and you just have to download in png format.

When i add a link 2 favorites, i don't always get the icon for that site. how do i add it?

for instance, my yahoo! link shows the microsoft generic icon; i know how to find the favicon but don%26#039;t know how to use it to change the icon for the link|||try|||Some of what I do is to initiate or be involved in design and product production programs. This requires me to be involved in, design and program management, negotiations with vendors, and getting management to buy into a concept.

Here are a few tips that I have used to help me get my programs accepted, ideas sold, project budgeted as well as implemented.

1) Know who is the decision maker

As we all know, in every organization there is a decision maker. Common sense eh? Not quite, a lot of vendors, sales men, or even design consultants don鈥檛 really take an active effort to find out who actually makes the buying decision in the organization.

The problem is often that who the decision maker is, is not very clear. The trick is to find, talk to and sell to that person directly. If you cannot get to that person, find the person that has direct access to him. This works for both internal and external selling.

2) Get an internal advocate

I would say this is one of the big secrets of selling. Find someone that likes you and your product. Then get this person to sell your product within the organization. Preferably, the best internal ally would be the person that has direct access to the decision maker.

Even if you can sell directly to the decision maker, having back up from your internal ally is also a good thing.

3) Find out what motivates the decision maker?

This is an interesting one. It basically oils the gears, and to get it to work needs a little more time. Basically you need to know what the decisions maker is looking for in his or her life and how you, your idea, or your product will help him/her achieve it. It could be fame, fortune, happiness etc. The hard part is finding it.

4) Find out what is the corporate agenda?

Oops you failed to convince the decision maker or the person next in line. Why? The answer is you probably did not do your home work well enough. You need to look at how your product can be part of the organization or how it can fulfill the corporate agenda or objective.

I find telling a story in your pitch helps people imagine how their life or company can be better with your idea or product.

5) Understand the protocols involved.

You have just given your most persuasive presentation to the decision maker, and you even get a verbal commitment, however the deal falls through. The next thing to do is not give up and cuss, but actually find out if it was really a problem with corporate bureaucracy or protocol.

In many companies, decision makers don鈥檛 actually make decisions alone. This is more so for decision makers higher up in the food chain in large organizations. Even though they may like your idea a lot, they will often still consult the other members of his/her executive staff or other senior business leaders under them. This is because they may need to ensure your product or design does not adversely affect other aspects of the business.

Other protocol problems could also be documentation or the use of the dreaded proposals. Somehow there are companies who love and only operate on such proposals, however it often gets lost in the bottom of the pile so you will need to be vigilant.

Thats all from me tonight, please stay tuned for part 2 which will be up in the next few days.

If you want to show a different URL in the address bar, you%26#039;re talking about using a so-called %26quot;url-rewrite%26quot; - which will not work without either:

1. Frames

or

2. Server side scripting

First method is the easiest, but also the most looked down upon, as using frames for the sake of using frames (or an address bar issue) is considered amateur work... but if you have no other option:

Make a page called index.html (or default.html, depends on your host); use the Frameset DOCType, and load a single frame to the page you actually want to show.

The JavaScript checks which address is showing in the top bar (should be the main frame container page; an added side effect is that if someone loads your page inside one of *their* frames, your page breaks out of it and reloads itself in its own frameset.

Why did the MSN favicon on my PC change to a blogger favicon? is it because of CCLEANER?

I have MSN and a Blogger website set as default tabs upon opening IE7. The problem is, when i opened it today, MSN showed the blogger favicon while the blogger tab showed a normal IE favicon. I know this is a minor concern... But it%26#039;s really getting to me. I ran CCLEANER before this happened. Is CCLEANER capable of doing that? I tried System Restore too, but that didn%26#039;t work.. Why did the favicons change by itself?

I tried opening MSN in firefox and it shows the MSN favicon.. and then i tried opening in IE again and MSN shows the blogger favicon.. How can i change it back?

Please help! It%26#039;s really bothering me~|||It might be a glitch.

You might want to try to close IE7 completely and then get rid of both of them as default tabs and then opening them up again.

How do I get my WordPress favicon to work? I followed the directions but all I see is a white square.?

I have a WordPress blog [hosted on Dreamhost] and I would like to add a favicon to my site. I created a 16x16 image, saved it as a .ico file, uploaded it to my account, and copied some text into my header.php file [I found the instructions on the WordPress website]. This changed my favicon from nothing to a white square, but the two letters on the icon are not present. I checked the image and it%26#039;s still good. Yahoo! infultrated my favicon, how can I fix this?

Today I successfully designed and uploaded my new favicon. It worked beautifully all day on Firefox, Explorer, and Opera. Then at some point tonight Yahoo! somehow changed the favicon to a Y! symbol and no matter how many times I delete and try to reupload, it won%26#039;t change back. Is there anything I can do?|||Hi, I just noticed this on my site too. I deleted yahoo%26#039;s favicon which is the defaut favicon.ico in your root directory. I uploaded my favicon.ico file to another directory in my site called %26quot;images%26quot; and in the head tags of of my store I placed the following:

Bex|||Hi,

Had same thing happening - changed the name of my favicon from favicon.ico to anandaapothecary.ico (our web address) and called it in the html header. Perhaps Yahoo%26#039;s favicon is also called favicon.ico...anyway, back to our good ol%26#039; custom favicon - though I think I might have to change the link rel=%26quot;shortcut icon%26quot; on every page of the site...not sure yet.

Cheers,

Eric|||I was very disappointed to discover the same thing happened to my site today. I think it is very out of line and inappropriate for Yahoo to override files of people using Yahoo hosting.

That said, simply re-upload your favicon image and name it something other than favicon.ico. It seems that Yahoo is only replacing your image with theirs on files specifically named favicon.ico. Rename the file to myfav.ico and redirect the shortcut icon in your header to the new filename.|||Yahoo has done this to me too....I%26#039;m outraged. I pay for the server space and didn%26#039;t give Yahoo permission to change my files. I have over 7000 webpages and don%26#039;t want to edit them to get rid of the stupid Yahoo favicon. They really screwed up this time.|||WOW, that really made me mad and took a long time to fix. A very cheap move by Yahoo.

How to insert Joomla favicon?

Hi,

I am having trouble inserting a favicon onto my Joomla site. I have been told how to create one, which I have done, but when I upload it to the media management sector, it does not appear to change the favicon of my site. Please can you help me ?!

Thanks, Matt!|||Hi Matt:

The following steps might help you.

1. Create an icon with the extension .ico

2. Upload the favicon image into the media manager and it should be in the %26#039;/%26#039; directory

3. Go to global configuration and edit the file name of %26quot;Favorite Site Icon%26#039; to the one you have uploaded. If the file name is favicon.ico put this file name there.

4. If you are still not getting the icon, please check the permissions of the favicon.ico

5. If you are using latest IE and you are not getting the favicon, then try using FireFox and see. If firefox renders it and IE is not able to render it you need to tweek little bit on the template side.

With Warm Regards

After that, simply upload the fav-icon to your website (in your main folder where index files are, basically, the first folder). Like http://yoursite.com/favicon.ico
